What we are doing to better the environment in which we live...
We use 'Who Gives A Crap' loo roll. This is a great company that donates 50% of all profits to building toilets in developing countries because they believe access to a safe, dignified loo is a basic human right. 100% recyclable, no inks, scents or bad chemicals. ‘Good for your bum. Great for the world.’
We have 48 solar panels generating green energy. This powers our Bunkhouse and nearby living accommodation.
All of our cleaning products are plant based, environmentally friendly and biodegradable. We mainly use Bio D 5l containers which means, again, that we can return our empties, reducing our plastic waste to almost zero.
All of our cleaning products are transferred into reusable dispensers.
Our bins bags are fully compostable and biodegradable. This equals one less thing in landfill.
We are happy to provide sanitary products free of charge to all of our guests in our bathrooms. They are plant based and entirely biodegradable.
We provide tea and coffee free of charge for all of our guests but we only use biodegradable, plastic free tea/coffee.
All of our hand soaps are bought in bulk to reduce the amount of plastic waste. We use Bio D, a UK based business which means we are keeping our carbon footprint as low as we can.
Bio D use only plant-based products and are chemical-free. Not only that but we are now able to send our empty 5l containers back to Bio D for recycling. So no plastic waste!
We use reusable dispensers for all of our soaps, shampoos and conditioners which means we don't throw any of our containers away.
We source Bio D washing-up liquid in 5l containers and transfer to reusable dispensers for customer use.
We have a kitchen food waste bin (for raw food only) in both of our kitchens, and ask that customers utilise this facility. The food waste is then taken to a large composting bin in our grounds.
We recycle everything that we can, and donate our cardboard boxes to the local allotments and Applecross nursery for their 'no dig' beds.
We have installed a dog waste composting bin with compostable dog waste bags, which we give out to all of our guests with dogs. This has greatly reduced the amount of dog waste on site, but also means that we are not adding to plastic waste and landfill.
This year we are not automatically providing towels in each room. We are providing towels on request which we hope will cut the number of towels washed and dried each day from 50 down to approximately 20. This will reduce our use of the drying machine and our impact on the environment.
We know it is difficult to get here by public transport. But if you do bring a bike we have a bike store for customer use. There is full bike maintenance tools, bike washing and cleaning facilities/equipment, and secure bike locks and wall hooks. This is a beautiful, wild landscape and it needs to be explored in slow time, and bikes are a great way of doing that.
We are proud to be making a difference and look forward to making more positive changes in the years to come.
